Gin Rules for Different Game Variants
The different gin rummy variants have some varying gin rules that make
them different from the original gin rummy games, but most of them still
stick to basic rummy rules up to a certain extent. Basically, the rules
that remain the same are those related to the flow of the game.
The Classic Gin Rules
Almost all variants of gin rummy have the same set of gin rules that
apply to how the game generally goes. For example, the game begins with
the dealing of the cards. After that, each player will take his turn,
during which he needs to draw a card from the two piles on the table, meld
his cards, and discard a card. Melding is a gin move that will always be
around; after all, it is the heart of the game. Melding means grouping
cards together into different sets and runs. Sets are groups of cards that
have the same value but different suits, while runs are groups of cards
with consecutive values and the same suit. By melding your cards, you
determine which cards will be of use to you and which you should just let
go of. The cards you let go of are your discards. Once you discard, the
other player takes his turn and does the same set of moves. Aside from
that, the values of the cards basically remain the same. The ace cards are
low cards and the face cards are high cards. As for the other rules,
especially regarding the scoring, the knocking, and many other details
tend to be modified to make different exciting versions out of one great
game.
Gin Rules for Oklahoma Gin
Oklahoma gin is probably the most famous variant of gin rummy. The game
is quite similar to the original game, but with some quite minor changes.
Like the original gin rummy game, Oklahoma gin uses a standard deck of
cards and can accommodate two active players at once. As a bit of a
modification, however, the game also allows up to four players at a time.
Instead of being dealt ten cards each such as in the two-player game, only
seven cards will be dealt for each player in a four-player game of
Oklahoma gin. But the major difference that made the Oklahoma version of
gin rummy different from its original form is that knocking is not
unlimited. The upcard, which refers to the card that is revealed after the
20th card is dealt for the players, will determine the number of times
that the players can knock. This value changes for every round since every
round has an upcard. But if the upcard is an ace, that also means only one
knock is allowed. Also, in Oklahoma gin, the objective is to try and get
rid of all your cards the first. But as for the winning strategies such as
the knocking, undercutting, and going gin, the same gin rules apply. Also,
once a player knocks or goes gin, the other players must lay down their
melded cards on the table so they can reduce their final deadwood count.
And as in other gin rummy variants, the gin move provides the highest
penalty points for the opponents. But in a multi-round game of Oklahoma
gin, the winner is the player who accumulates the least penalty points
instead of the player who gets the highest score.
Gin Rules for Hollywood Gin
Hollywood gin is another popular version of gin rummy. It is, however,
strictly only for two players, unlike Oklahoma gin. But like in the
original gin rules, Hollywood gin uses a standard deck consisting of 52
cards without jokers, with the ace cards considered as low cards and the
face cards valued at ten points each. The objective of the game is similar
to the objective of the original gin rummy game, which is to meld cards to
earn points. The winner is the player who gets the highest number of
points throughout the game. One game of Hollywood gin takes several rounds
to finish. The flow of the game is very similar to classic rummy as well.
Every player will be given his turns. On the first turn of both players in
every round, the player who did not deal the cards should decide whether
he should take the upcard or draw a card from the pile. If the upcard is
taken during the first turn, the player who takes it will need to discard
one card before the other player takes a turn. Most of the other factors
in Hollywood gin are similar to the classic gin rummy. The main difference
lies in the scoring. The unique factor in Hollywood gin is that three
games will be played simultaneously, and three score columns will be
filled out as the game goes on. A player’s first win will be recorded in
the first column in the scoresheet, the second win in the second column,
and the third and other wins following that to all the three columns.
After that, each column is calculated and considered to be three separate
games.
